Shipping Container Homes are Green & EcoFriendly |
||
Ecologically Friendly container homesIn this age of global warming, brought on in part by deforestation and indiscriminant reduction of plant life that can absorb greenhouse gases, we at Shipping container homes have adopted the policy of constructing new homes using recycled and recyclable materials whenever possible. |
||
Why are Shipping container homes are an “ecologically friendly’ choice? The containers we use, which are commonly called ISBU’s, are produced in great quantities and are used, primarily, by those countries/regions that have a high export to import ratio. For many years the United States, as an example, has had a high trade deficit. At last count, there were over 700,000 ISBU’s that were no longer in use. These containers can take up a lot of space, become an eyesore, and if not maintained, eventually become an ecological burden. By using these ISBU’s for home construction, and properly preparing the homes against introducing ecologically unfriendly materials, it affords us the opportunity to reduce the overall negative impact on the environment. |

In those cases where we find it necessary to use non-recycled materials (such as wood), we do not make use of “old growth forest” materials. We use only those materials that are fast growing and are re-introduced at the same, or greater, rate than they are harvested. |
Container homes in Costa Rica can be built out with recycled materials: |

Recycled Plant in Costa Rica The following photos were taken on a trip to a local recycling plant in Costa Rica. In the photos, you see the process of taking garbage from the streets of Costa Rica, cleaning it, chopping it, then melting and forming it into plastic wood beams.

The company is new and has been very diligent in collecting garbage around the San Jose area. Watching the garbage change into recycled wood is quite a sight. It is actually very easy, as you can see from the photos. These are the industries we as homebuilders and developers must support. We can support them by purchasing their products and therby raising the demand for them. The company will then be forced to collect more garbage in order to produce it’s product. When building a shipping container home, you have the option of using recycled plastic to build the decks, balconies and roofs. Also, since the 1980s, scientists have repeatedly warned us that the world faces a landfill crisis. Former Vice President Al Gore, for example, asserted we are running out of ways to dispose of our waste in a manner that keeps it out of either sight or mind. Everything we make comes from natural resources. Sustainability is the only model that makes sense. Everything we manufacture should be easily re-tooled to be reusable. This is the proper role for technology. This is true harmony with the earth. This is the third degree of reparation. |
